While I agree that software testing is both an art and a science, I beg to differ with Micheal on "there is no process in art." Art contains many aspects of science as art is not created in vacuum. Music has the science of waves and frequency (as well as continuing to test the refractions, modulations, etc. The process would entail composing the lyrics, melody, and measures. Experience (and history) guides the creator on what will invoke responses to that medium as they put the components together.

Interesting discussion, you did bring up some of the persistent issues with implementation of automation for test execution. False & high expectations from the onset being the number one problem I've seen time and time again over the last 20+ years working with tools.

It would be another good talk if you were to cover the common misconceptions regarding this line of work and how best to safeguard against them so you can have a chance of gaining a higher level of success. With success meaning gaining 'useful' benefit from implementing the automation. And useful can mean multiple things, depending on purpose.

Regards,

Jim Hazen

There are some projects wherein I have experienced that the developers dont like to answer questions as they are very busy and sometimes they do not know the complete functionality, Also there's no proper documentation and the users are not available. This puts a fear in the minds of testers, and they start testing based on certain assumptions which may not be right.
Developing a relationship with the developers is one way to do it but how do you deal with developers who keep complaining on your back once you ask questions?

Hm, the audio of this podcast is very quiet. It is almost unusable. Tried to play it via web, winamp and quicktime player. Other podcasts from the page I hear much louder so it is not a speaker issue.
